Manual Lymphatic Drainage or MLD is a specialized form of manual therapy that is gentle, flowing and rhythmic. Specific techniques are used in a very specific sequence to stimulate and encourage the lymphatic system to drain to the lymph nodes that are functioning normally, thus reducing swelling. This technique was developed by Dr. Emil Vodder in the early 1930s. It was originally used for the treatment of chronic sinusitis and other immune system disorders. The benefits and uses have now been shown to be more widespread. Lymphatic drainage can benefit just about everyone. The Lymphatic System is an important part of our body’s immune system. Its extensive drainage system has to function properly in order to help keep bodily fluids in balance, regenerate tissues, and filter out toxins to fight infections. Lymphatic vessels carry the lymphatic fluid through the lymph nodes, which act as filters to trap whatever is harmful to the body. If lymphatic circulation is impaired, there will be a buildup of toxins leading to illness. Lymphatic drainage helps to drain this fluid back into blood circulation to help cleanse the body, remove waste and toxins, transport fat from the digestive tract to the blood, and increase the production of white blood
cells.
