MANUAL ADJUSTMENT

What is manual adjusting?

A manual adjustment is also known as spinal manipulation. A manual adjustment involves applying pressure to specific joints in a specialized manner to relieve pain, soreness, or tightness. Although people typically see a chiropractor for a manual adjustment in the spine, it can also be utilized in other areas of the body. As we age and complete daily activities misalignments of the spine can occur. These can also result from a disease or condition, injury, working conditions, or improper lifting. These misalignments can cause pain and health complications if left untreated. There are various techniques for adjustments. Dr. Magar utilizes over a dozen different techniques to adjust.

Uses

The spine is a crucial part of the body. What most people do not know is that the spine has a greater effect on the body than you realize. A misaligned spine can cause pain in your knees or ankles. A properly aligned spine is also crucial for efficient function of the nervous system. The nervous system is how the body communicates with itself. The spinal cord is inside of the spine and helps relay messages between the brain and the rest of the body. When it is misaligned, this communication system functions improperly. Getting a manual chiropractic adjustment helps align the vertebrae and spine in its proper fashion.

Benefits

There are several benefits to getting a manual adjustment. The three largest benefits from getting an adjustment are increased mobility, increased flexibility, and decreased pain. However, a chiropractic adjustment can also be beneficial in managing symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, arthritis, whiplash and other minor head and neck injuries, sport injuries, work injuries, and migraines. An adjustment can also assist in improving your posture. All of the benefits listed prior all fall into one of the two larger benefits of receiving a manual chiropractic adjustment.

Decreased Pain

Through manipulating the spine and targeting specific joints, pain that you may be experiencing due to a number of conditions can be alleviated-whether this be chronic pain or acute pain. As stated before, many pains that are in the back, neck, or other joints are due to spinal misalignment. This can also be due to decreased range of motion in a specific joint. A prime example of how a manual adjustment can decrease pain is by relieving neck or upper back tension that causes migraines. Pain from inflammation or pressure on the nerves can also be relieved through chiropractic adjustments. A chiropractic adjustment can also aid in relieving nerve pain, such as sciatica pain.

Increased mobility and flexibility

When the spine is misaligned, it can result in immobility of the spine. This not only negatively impacts the spine, but also the connective tissue around the spine and beyond. By adjusting the spine, mobility is increased and proper alignment of the spine is fostered. This is because the spinal cord can now communicate properly with one another. The adjustment also reduces the amount of inflammation in the affected area and releases pressure that nerve(s) may be under. Not only does the adjustment aid in improving mobility of the joints, but also the tendons, ligaments, and muscles around the spine. This happens because misalignment of the spine can cause tightness and stiffness in these areas. Properly aligning the spine increases mobility and the flexibility of these affected tissues.
